The Southern Powder River Basin is home to 13 surface coal mines, which produce in excess of 400 million tons of coal per year and provide approximately 40% of our nation’s coal. An average of 85 coal trains collectively move more than one million tons of coal per day out of the Southern Powder River Basin.

During this CLE, you will have the opportunity to tour Cloud Peak Energy’s Cordero Rojo Mine, while learning about mine regulation and current legal issues in surface coal mining. During the tour, presenters will provide background information on coal mining, explain how mine planning is conducted, discuss conflicts in mineral estates and ownership, and provide an overview of a surface coal mine’s requirements under SMCRA and the Wyoming Environmental Quality Act.
