Laramie Attorney Awarded for Community Service
CHEYENNE - The Wyoming State Bar is pleased to announce that Kathleen A. Hunt, an attorney from Laramie, is a recent recipient of a Leadership Award at a luncheon held in conjunction with the Bar’s annual convention last week in Jackson.
“Leadership Awards are an important recognition of our members’ commitment to the communities in which they live and practice to better their respective communities and improve the quality of life for those who live there,” said Past President Joseph B. Bluemel from Kemmerer.
Hunt was admitted to practice law in Wyoming in 1976 and has been in private practice in Laramie since that time.
Hunt was appointed by Governor Mike Sullivan to serve on the Wyoming Transportation Commission in 1993 and served as chairman of the Commission during the last two years of her term. She was also selected by Governor Sullivan and the Wyoming legislature to serve on a legislative interim committee regarding the establishment of a medium-security prison within the State. In 1999, Governor Jim Geringer appointed her to serve on the Board of Trustees for the University of Wyoming, and she served as President of that Board in 2005 and 2006. During the 1980s, Hunt was appointed by the Wyoming State Bar and confirmed by the Wyoming Supreme Court to serve on the Board of Professional Responsibility, the first woman to serve in that capacity. She was an elected member of the Wyoming Judicial Nominating Commission from 1993 to 1997, which has constitutional authority to nominate state-wide judicial candidates for selection by the Governor. During her tenure on that Commission, she participated in filling over 20 judicial vacancies throughout the State.
Hunt has served as General Counsel for the Wyoming Association of Municipalities for over thirty years. In that capacity, she has been responsible for teaching local government law to hundreds of local elected officials throughout the State. She served as Assistant City Attorney and City Attorney for the City of Laramie for 13 years.
She has served as an adjunct professor in the Political Science Department and the College of Law at the University of Wyoming. She was a founding member of the SAFE program in Albany County, and served on the Laramie Area Chamber of Commerce. She was a board member of the Wyoming Territorial Prison Park, where she conducted volunteer research on the legal issues of the Territorial City of Laramie, and was President of the Friends of the Library at the time of building the Albany County Library. She is a past-President of the Soroptimist Club of Laramie. She is active in her church, Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and was a member of the Board of the Laramie Faith-Based Assistance Project, which addressed housing needs in Laramie for those with limited financial means.
