Federal Law Clerks Tell All

Tune in for a special presentation about federal practice and procedure from the perspective of four former federal law clerks. Our panelists will share practice pointers and pet peeves, overlooked rules and best practices—adding to the tool kit of any federal practitioner. Come prepared with your own questions and leave with unique insight from this experienced group who collectively served as law clerks to various judges of the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming.

Speakers

Kari Hartman

Kari Hartman is an Associate at Crowley Fleck PLLP in the Cheyenne, Wyoming Office. Prior to joining Crowley Fleck, she clerked for the Honorable Judge Alan B. Johnson. Kari currently practices in the areas of commercial transactions and commercial litigation.

Emily Madden

Emily S. Madden is an associate at The Spence Law Firm. She graduated from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 2019 where was the Editor-in-Chief of the Wyoming Law Review and the Brimmer Scholar. Following law school, Emily clerked for the Honorable Kelly H. Rankin, Chief Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming. In her spare time, Emily enjoys spending time with her family and teaching legal writing at the University of Wyoming College of Law.

Brandi Monger

Brandi Monger attended the University of Wyoming College of Law, graduating with honors and Order of the Coif in 2003. After graduation, Brandi served as a law clerk for the Honorable Clarence A. Brimmer, before going into private practice with Hickey and Evans, LLP. In 2007, she joined the Wyoming Attorney General’s Office. Brandi left the Attorney General’s Office to serve as in-house counsel for the Wyoming Retirement System. In 2010, she went to work for the Honorable Nancy D. Freudenthal. Brandi clerked for Judge Freudenthal until May 2019, when she returned to the Attorney General’s Office as Deputy Attorney General of the Civil Division.

Leah Schwartz

Leah Schwartz is the managing partner at Ranck & Schwartz, LLC in Jackson where she maintains a broad civil litigation practice. She served as law clerk to Judge Nancy D. Freudenthal of the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming and to Judge Gregory A. Phillips of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. She is the current President of the Equal Justice Wyoming Foundation and the Chairperson of the Federal Bar Section. She also moonlights as a podcast host of the “Tales from the Tenth” series, sponsored by the Tenth Circuit Historical Society.

Leah is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Wyoming College of Law.

Morgan Thompson

Morgan Thompson is a corporate associate at Holland & Hart LLP in Denver, Colorado. She counsels clients primarily in the renewable energy space in matters spanning from early-stage project development through to operation. Her practice includes drafting of agreements and contracts, buying and selling of projects and additional strategic transactions. Additionally, Morgan counsels companies on matters including mergers and acquisitions and commercial transactions. Morgan graduated from University of Wyoming College of Law in 2020 and, prior to joining Holland & Hart, served as a law clerk for the Honorable Scott W. Skavdahl of the U.S. District Court of Wyoming.
