The Journey is the Goal – Rethinking Well-Being Within the Legal Field

August 12, 2026 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.

The legal profession continues to experience disproportionately high rates of anxiety, depression, substance use, addiction, burnout, and other threats to well-being. These challenges often emerge early in practice, when young lawyers are navigating professional uncertainty, demanding workloads, financial pressure, and the responsibilities and isolation of legal practice.

This presentation will examine mental health, substance use, and lawyer well-being through both a practical and conceptual lens. It will begin with an analysis of what these struggles look like, how they are defined, and how warning signs and points of crisis may be identified in ourselves and others. It will then address the resources and services available to lawyers who are struggling, as well as those concerned about someone around them.

The presentation will also consider how the structure, culture, and traditions of the legal profession have shaped the way lawyers experience stress, connection, professional identity, and support. From that foundation, it will explore how the profession might move toward a more communal and sustainable understanding of well-being, and the role that WyLAP and other legal entities and resources can play in helping make that shift possible. Finally, the presentation will examine mental health and addiction as part of a broader evolution in how the profession understands competence, responsibility, and our responsibility to care for one another.
