Powers Receives Wyoming State Bar Pro Bono Award for Community Service

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Bar is pleased to announce that George Powers, an attorney from Cheyenne, has received the 2019 Pro Bono Award for Community Service.  Marguerite Herman, Powers’ wife, presented the award last night during the Pro Bono Celebration in Cheyenne, Wyoming, which was held in conjunction with the National Pro Bono Week.

The nomination for the award was submitted by Charlotte Powers who is also an attorney and Herman and Powers’ daughter.

Powers has made significant contributions to and on behalf of the Wyoming legal community in several different ways and was recognized for his volunteer work in the Cheyenne community, specifically with the annual Wyoming High School Mock Trial Tournament.

“I’ve always admired my dad for his wit, humility, and ability to see humor in the absurdity of life,” said Charlotte Powers. “I also appreciate the fact that he volunteers his time and skills as a lawyer in a variety of ways that benefit the legal community and legal education in Wyoming.”

Powers is a partner at the Cheyenne law firm of Sundahl, Powers, Kapp and Martin. He has practiced law with the firm since graduating from the University of Wyoming College of Law, with honors, in 1982.

Powers has a broad practice covering a wide range of civil and administrative issues, including insurance law, railroad law, medical malpractice and general personal injury. During his 37-year career in the law, he has appeared before state district courts in 22 out of Wyoming’s 23 counties as well as in the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming, and briefed and argued appeals in the Wyoming Supreme Court and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Kerr Chapter of the American Inns of Court (president 2015-2016).
