Legal professionals must manage hundreds of tasks and deadlines related to matters. We receive information and tasks from meetings, depositions, telephone calls, website inquiries, instant messages, social media, as well as through very high volumes of emails every day. Managing these interruptions, prioritizing these deadlines, and achieving work/life balance requires that you have the proper tools and processes in place. Most legal professionals also lack a methodology or understanding of the technology to process all this information. In this interactive session, you will learn how to process emails and build a master task list that captures everything that you must do, so those items never get lost. You will learn a method for daily planning, weekly planning and project forecasting that will vastly improve your work/life balance and your level of organization.

Rural Practice Initiatives

April 19, 2024 9:15 AM-9:30 AM

The Wyoming State Bar has a number of initiatives to support solo practitioners and small law firms and to increase the number of practitioners serving rural communities. The Rural Practice Opportunity Fund is now available to connect rural practitioners with UW law students by providing financial and other support for a 5–10-week summer internship. Other efforts include the Rural Practice Initiative which seeks legislative and other funding to provide stipends for five years to practitioners who reside and establish a practice in a qualifying rural community; and resources to help practitioners with succession planning, mentoring resources and establishing a new practice.

End Game: The Many Considerations Surrounding Law Firm Succession Planning

April 19, 2024 1:30 PM-2:30 PM

So, you want to sell your law firm? It’s possible, though the process may have more twists and turns than you imagine and it’s better if you ramp up to it. Or maybe you want to buy a law firm. Also possible with similar twists and turns.

Law firm mergers and acquisitions are made on a regular basis—even when it comes to solos and small firms. In fact, those sorts of transactions have been on the rise for the last several years.

As older lawyers look to retire, and younger lawyers look to expand their firms, a sale or merger may be just what the doctor (of law) ordered. So, let’s talk over how it’s done.

Join us for this lively program, when we’ll discuss all the ways that law firm associations can ebb and flow as lawyers decide to wind down.

Specific topics to be addressed will include:

• How to plan for a law firm sale or merger

• Actions to take prior to a sale or merger

• Selling to an internal versus external buyer

• What happens post-sale?

• What happens if you just want to shut things down?

• What happens if you pass away while still actively managing your law firm? (yeah it’s morbid, but we gotta talk about it)
